ZANELE MUHOLI – ‘Hail, the Dark Lioness’

Attending this exhibition by Zanele Muholi was honestly one of the most enchanting experiences and potentially one of the best; if not the best exhibition I have ever been to. Her displays really capture the beauty, strengths, raw emotion and evident self-love in the variety of persona’s she embodies of these incredible black women, who, along with people of colour in general, have had to face hundreds of years of racism and oppression even up until the present day where it still exists in the world. Muholi does not let the viewer shy away from the foundations and reasoning behind this outstanding project; but instead, she assists us in understanding where it comes from and what it means with the compelling words she has placed on the walls to accompany her exqusite photographs. She reaches into the depths of these characters hearts and souls revealing the struggles and challenges they have had to confront on their day to day REAL lives, using every day matierials like gloves and rubber tyres to accessorize her appearance and express the social, economic and environental issues that black people have to tackle and overcome throughout their lives. Muholi’s set up of this exhibition as a whole is undeniably stunning and inspiring; showing us a true dedication and sentiment for her work, from the content of photographs, even down to the layout and presentation of the display.
