The winners of 2017/18 ‘Photographer of the Year award’, both seem to have still life photographs in comparable nature environments, which undeniably, are incredibly striking and display intricate details that allow us to construct our own version of what the stories behind these images (if any) entail. Both being black and white images makes it easier to analyse the two and the differences between them; the lighting and contrast, the reflections and shadows (or lack thereof), the composition and how the space is occupied in these photographs. All these components come together to develop these images and the tranquility of emotion they invoke.

I have noticed that the work chosen and labeled as the best, and award worthy by the judges, display similar factors between them and stand out in their respective categories in one way or another. They invite us to stay and observe as opposed to just glancing and moving on and there seems to be something alluring about each series, that compels us to explore them even further. Unlike the first two images posted, the rest of these photographs seem to vary in style and concept/creativity, giving life to each category in its own unique form. I can’t imagine it is easy for the judges to choose between more than 300,000 entrants!
