PODCAST: BEN SMITH – JENNY LEWIS

Had a little listen to Ben Smith’s podcast on a small voice featuring Jenny Lewis and took some notes of what she was talking about. She had a very interesting story on how she got into photography even though she graduated with an art degree; working in a printing lab at the metro (for very little money) taught her a lot about photography and allowed her to absorb all the visual information she was exposed to from other people sharing their own personal views through photographs.
Jenny speaks about the struggles of living in London and sleeping on her sisters floor while working non-stop at the lab, for little money, as little as £15 a week. However, she explains how much she adored working there and how working there gave her the opportunity to print her images without having to spend the costs that regular photographers were spending. Everyone at the lab was supportive of her and she could pursue her piquing interest in taking photos of her own after seeing and studying everybody else’s for such a long time. This must of been a real breakthrough for her. What I love most about her story is the fact that she developed this interest in photography through seeing other people express themselves and being able to take in her surroundings and how beautiful the world was through still images.
